For example, the player can choose between 55 different skin tones, which range from realistic (Caucasian, African-American, Hispanic) to completely outlandish (“Alabaster”, “Deep Purple”, and “Devilish Red”, to name a few). There are the standard “Sex” (Male or Female) and “Race” (African-American, Asian, Caucasian, and Hispanic) options, but the rest of the options give the player a sometimes bizarre set of choices. During the process at the beginning of the game, the player is presented with six characters of varying races and gender they are then able to either use one of these characters and continue on to gameplay, or they can use a number of options to modify and customize their character. The player creation system for Saints Row IV is both easy to use and surprisingly in depth. Will Greenwald of PC Magazine played the game as “a cockney ginger crime boss with a goatee who dressed like the Riddler, in a neon green trench coat, jetpack,and bowler hat” (Greenwald, 2013). The player can further customize The Boss in game through clothing stores, plastic surgery clinics, and tattoo parlors.
The player can customize their own version of The Boss with a number of body/skin types, facial structures, and various other options. Saints Row has never been a series to take itself too seriously, and the often bizarre character creation mechanics are a clear extension of that. I completely agree with reviewer Will Greenwald when he states “Customization and character growth are the two biggest pillars of Saints Row IV’s game play and personality outside of cutscenes” (Greenwald, 2013). In this installment, the gang’s national popularity has increased to the point where The Boss has been elected President of the United States, and must protect the world from an invading alien race, the Zin. In the series, the player takes on the role of “The Boss”, the leader of the street gang The Third Street Saints. Saints Row IV, the latest in the comedic action-adventure video game series, has been described as “crazy, mindless fun” (Greenwald, 2013). While there are undoubtedly numerous games that feature excellent character creators that meet these criteria, one of the best examples I can find is from the action adventure game Saints Row IV. – Unique characteristics – Is there any function or mechanic in this game that is not seen anywhere else? – In game modifications – Can the player make any changes to their character or their clothing once they’ve started playing the game? – Ease of use: How easy or complicated is the creation mechanic to learn and use? However, like the video games they appear in, certain elements can make a character creator better, easier to use, and ultimately, more fun. Character creators in video games can be as diverse and unique as the games themselves.
